India create history, smash their highest-ever medal tally at Asian Games, can dream of century
Asian Games:- “The Indian contingent has set a remarkable record at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou by achieving their highest-ever medal tally, and there are still four and a half days of thrilling action left to unfold. The year 2023 has indeed marked a significant milestone for India’s ascent in the global sports arena, as they have surpassed their previous best of 70 medals from the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. Currently, their medal count stands at a remarkable 71 as of Wednesday, with two more medals added in the first half of the day.
On Day 10, India finished with 69 medals, firmly securing the fourth position in the medal standings. Day 11 witnessed a historic achievement as Ram Baboo and Manju Rani clinched a bronze medal in the 35km race walk mixed team event with a timing of 5:51:14. While China claimed the gold (5:16:41) and Japan secured the silver (5:22:11), India’s bronze medal marked a new milestone, matching their best-ever performance at the Asian Games.
Shortly thereafter, Indian archers Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Pravin Ojas Deotale made history by winning gold in the compound archery mixed team event, narrowly defeating South Korea’s Chaewon So and Jaehoon Joo with a score of 159-158. This triumph not only secured India’s first gold in archery for this edition of the Games but also elevated their overall medal tally to an impressive 71, tying their best-ever gold medal count at the Games. With 16 gold medals, India has equaled their previous gold medal count from Jakarta in 2018.
The Indian archers have outdone themselves in Hangzhou, surpassing their previous best of three medals in the 2014 Incheon Games. In the 19th Asian Games, they have already ensured four medals and have three more guaranteed in the individual archery events, two of which could turn out to be gold. The highly anticipated finals of these events are yet to come.
With more medals on the horizon, the question arises: Can India reach the coveted milestone of 100 medals? India’s strong performance in squash doubles and boxing has already secured two assured medals in each discipline, which would bring their final tally to an impressive 78, even if they do not secure any additional podium finishes.”
