Pump in series or parallel |
Pump in series or parallel | Normally we install the pump in series to increase to increase the head of pump . Types of pumps, classification of pumps , centrifugal pumps. Pump in parallel.
Hi friends , today in this article we can cover pump in parallel or pump in series ,
“Pump in parallel vrs Pump in series “
as we know that selection pump is very important for process engineer as well as design engineer ,
what happen when pump in series or pump in parallel arrangement,
when we have more than one pump foe one process then we need to arrange them whether in Parallel order or in series depends on condition .
we can arrange pump in two types
1) Parallel
2) Series
pump in parallel
we can arrange pump in parallel arrangement when need to increase the flow of pump ,
if we need pump flow rate 120 M3/hr and we have 3 pumps of 40 M3/hr flow and 20M head ,
then we need arrange them in parallel.
if we arrange 3 pump in parallel then
- Head remain constant
- in this type we take suction from reservoir or discharge is in a common header
- total flow is nothing but addition of 3 pump flow

centrifugal pump in parallel
When centrifugal pumps are connected in parallel, they operate simultaneously with their suction and discharge connected to a common pipeline. In this configuration, each pump contributes to the overall flow rate, allowing for increased capacity and redundancy. Parallel operation is useful when the system demands higher flow rates than a single pump can provide. When pumps are identical, the total flow rate is the sum of individual pump flow rates. However, careful consideration is required to ensure that the pumps have compatible characteristics to prevent issues like cavitation or uneven load distribution. Proper control and monitoring systems are necessary to maintain stable and efficient parallel pump operation.

when to pump in series or parallel ?
Choosing between pumping in series or parallel depends on the specific requirements of the system, the desired flow rate, and the pressure needed. Here’s a more detailed explanation of when to use pumps in series or parallel:
1. **Pumping in Series:** When pumps are connected in series, their outlets and inlets are connected consecutively. In this configuration, the total head (pressure) that the system can provide increases, while the flow rate remains the same as that of an individual pump. Pumping in series is suitable when there is a need to overcome a significant amount of head or pressure drop in the system. For instance, in tall buildings where water needs to be delivered to upper floors, multiple pumps in series may be used to boost the pressure and reach higher levels. However, it’s essential to consider the impact of increased pressure on the pump’s efficiency and power consumption.
2. **Pumping in Parallel:** When pumps are connected in parallel, their inlets and outlets are connected to a common pipeline. In this configuration, the total flow rate is the sum of the flow rates of individual pumps, while the total head remains the same as that of an individual pump. Pumping in parallel is suitable when there is a need to increase the flow rate of the system without significantly affecting the pressure. For instance, in large industrial processes or water distribution systems, multiple pumps in parallel can be employed to meet higher flow rate demands. It’s important to ensure that the pumps have compatible characteristics to prevent issues like uneven load distribution or backflow.
The decision to use pumps in series or parallel depends on factors such as the system requirements, available space, and energy efficiency considerations. Careful hydraulic analysis and system design are necessary to determine the most suitable configuration. Additionally, proper control and monitoring systems should be implemented to maintain stable and efficient pump operation in either series or parallel arrangements.
Currently I writing some another article on centrifugal pumps and distillaion with animation and including video lecture . I will tray all the best way to explain the articles on Very important topics of chemical engineering or related to chemical industry or pharmaceutical industry.
