7. Types of Condenser-details about types and its design

Types of Condenser :-Hi Engineers , in today’s chapter we will study a basic but valuable chapter named “ Condenser “. As we know that value of heat exchanger in field of chemical ,pharmaceutical ,fertilizer , specialty chemicals and also in refinery. But before to start this article we need to clear some points which are necessary to understand our today’s topic (i.e. Condenser ) .

Condensation

It is heat transfer process in which we can transfer the heat from high temperature to low temperature with phase change . A condensation is process of phase change in which we vapor is get condensed in too liquid using a cooling medium( Types of condenser ).

We can use cooling medium directly or indirectly to transfer the heat .

Heat Transfer

This is a process in which we can transfer the heat from one temperature to another temperature . In heat transfer it is not necessary whether that phase change or not ? whether temperature increase or decreases ? Hope you will get some clarity regarding heat transfer and condensation . Now we will start our today’s topic named “Types of Condenser ” .

Condenser

It is device or equipment which is used for process of condensation .For phase change ,i.e. change of phase from vapor to liquid it is necessary to use a equipment , so role of condenser is condense the vapor to liquid .How ever we can use condenser for both purpose , for phase change as well as lower the temperate. But that purpose we need to design the system for both role ( phase change from vapor to liquid and lower the temperature from high to low ) .To play both role it is necessary to over design the capacity of condenser (heat transfer ).

Types of Condenser

We can classify the condenser as follows

  • Air Cooled condenser
  • Water cooled Condenser
Types of condenser
Types of condenser

Air Cooled Condenser

In this type air is used for condensation purpose . In this system air is one side of heat exchanger and other side is hot steam or hot medium(Condensation ) . Air flow cool the hot steam . For this purpose it is necessary to design the system ( Types of condenser ).

  • heat exchanger
  • single pass Shell and tube condenser
  • Tube sheet

Water cooled Condenser

This is most and widely used heat transfer equipment in chemical ,pharmaceutical industry. In this heat transfer equipment water is used as cooling medium (heat transfer ) .

There are three types WCC ,

  • Tube and Tube
  • Shell and Coil type
  • Shell and Tube Type

Tube and tube

In this type we can use tube in tube . In this type we can use one tube for heating purpose and second tube is used for cooling side .Following image will describe the best .

Shell and Coil

In this types of condenser there is one side shell and another side is coil (heat transfer ) . This is very rarely used heat transfer equipment in industry(Condensation ) .

Shell and Tube Condenser

In this type we can use hot fluid either as cooling or heating purpose. While tube side also can used as cooling or heating . We can arrange heat transfer as parallel or as counter current . Following drawing will represent this . Please refer following diagram for parallel or counter current flow in heat exchanger ( Types of condenser ). This is the container holding cold outer fluids; the shell diameter should be selected wisely to give a close fit to tube bundles. Shells are usually fabricated from standard steel pipes with satisfactory corrosion allowance(heat transfer ).

Multi pass shell and tube condenser
Multi Pass shell and tube condenser

Shell and tube condenser can classify as ,

  • Single Pass shell and tube
  • Multi pass shell and Tube
  • U type Shell and Tube

Single Pass shell and tube Condenser

In single pass type we use one pass in shell side and one pass in heating side .Selection of heating side and cooling is depends upon process requirement. We can use heating in shell as well as tube side .If material is corrosive the it is good to use tube side. In general eater brine and chilling can use as cooling media(Condensation ) . Please refer following fig for this “types of condenser” .

Multi pass shell and Tube Condenser

In this type we can use one pass in shell side and two or more pass in tube side. Normally in tube side we can use cooling / chilling /brine as cooling medium (Condensation ). Please refer the following figure for this type( Types of condenser ).

U type Shell and condenser

In this types of heat exchanger we can use u type of loop in tube side , due to its U type loop in tube side we can called it as “U type Shell and Tube Condenser “.(Condensation )
