Packed bed column

Packed bed is nothing but the column in which we fill the packing.

There are different types of packing

Different types of packing available in the market we need choose the correct one as per our process requirements.

There are several factors which we need to consider while packing selection. Packing type which used in column is mainly depend on Type of process, like different types of distillation processes, scrubber packed bed, column purification packed bed column, packed bed reactor column, packed bed use as dimister.

1. Aim of packed bed
2. temperature of process
3. pressure of process
4. pH of process

Aim of packed bed type column

we need to select the packing type on process aim. Some aim and type of packing is,

• Distillation process – structure, wire mesh, pall ring and much more.
• scrubber
• packed bed reactor – reaction catalysts
• column purification:- different types of resin like cation exchange resin and anoin exchange resin.
• In organic impurity removal – carbon bed

temperature and pressure of process

we need to choose the packing which is suitable for process required temperature and pressure.

pH or corrosive ity of material

Depends upon the corrosion valve we need to select the MOC or some time types of packing.

Application of packed bed column

Some common application of packed bed type column are as follows,

1. Distillation
2. absorption
3. disorption
4. purification

Distillation

Distillation is separation process used in chemical, pharmaceutical and oil industry. Distillation is worked on vapor pressure or boiling point of components in the mixture. For high boiling difference we use simple distillation method. Packed bed type column or tray column is use when there is very close vapor pressure of components or if relative velocity is close to 1.

There are different types packing used in distillation column. Some common used distillation column packing are as follows,

• structure packing – BX type or BX+
• wire mesh packing
• pall ring
• random packing
• ceramic ring

Purification of chemical or removal of inorganic impurity from crude.

Packed bed column used for inorganic impurity removal. There are so many methods for separation of organic compounds but for separation of organic and inorganic compounds mostly we use carbon or resin. We can use carbon column for removal of inorganic impurity from organic compounds or we can use different types resin like cation exchange resin to separate the inorganic impurity from organic compounds. so in packed bed column we use resin or carbon if we want to remove inorganic impurity from organic compound and to increase the purity of organic material.

Packed Bed Reactor

Packed bed reactor is nothing but a reactor which contains packing filled in the column. There are different types reactor like batch reactor, CSTR or packed bed type of reactor. So in packed bed type of reactor we fill the reaction catalysts as packing. Reaction catalysts is different for different reactions in some reaction we can use resin or in some reaction TS1 types.

Conclusion

There are different types packing available in the market we need select the type as per requirement of process. A packed bed column is nothing but column with packing which is use for different reasons like purification of organic compounds or removal of inorganic impurity from organic material. We can use packed column in distillation where absorption and distortion occur or we can use in impurity removal process or we can use in scrubber. Packed bed can use as dimister too. There are different types of packed bed column packing available for distillation column like wire mesh packing and random packing.
