Utility used in the chemical industry

Utility used in the chemical industry is very important to for all of Chemical Engineer. Utility is very important for production or manufacturing. Utility play a very important role in chemical industry as well as pharmaceutical , agriculture ,oil and gas industry. Do to understand different utility used in chemical industry ,first we need to understand about utility.

What is utility ?
Utility is that part of industry which does not take directly part in process but it help process to get result.

following are some main and basic utility used in Chemical industry.

Cooling

Chilling water
Chilling brine
Steam

THF
Hot water
Air

Vacuum
Nitrogen
Scrubber

DM water

Above are main utility, apart from above there are other utilities are also used in chemical industries.

Cooling water

Cooling water is use to cool the process up to atmospheric temperature. Cooling towers use to produce cooling water . There are different types of cooling tower available , like natural draft cooling towers , mechanical drafts cooling towers .

The main advantage of cooling tower is this is very cheap utility as compared to chilling .

The main disadvantage of cooling tower water is , it can not use for cooling Bello 25 degree Celsius.

Chilling water (Chiller )

chiller is use to produce chilling water . Chilling water is use to cool the process below 25 degree Celsius.

The main disadvantage of chilling water is it can not chill the process below 8 degree Celsius.

Chilling brine water

Chilling brine water is use to cool the process below 8 degree Celsius. Chiller is use to produce chilled water .

Steam Boiler

Steam boiler is use to produce steam ,which is use to heat the process . Steam is available in various pressure ,like low pressure , middle pressure and high pressure. High pressure steam required IBR license.

The main advantage of steam is it gives high heat transfer coefficient. So we can transfer more heat than oil heating system.

Steam use latent heat to heat the process.

THF (Hot oil )

Thermic heating fluid ( THF) is hot oil use in chemical industry to heat the process up to 300 degree Celsius.

The main disadvantage of THF is it gives low heat transfer coefficient than steam.

THF use only sensible heat to heat the process.

Hot water

Hot water is use for some special application where steam and oil can not use . Need a hot water system to produce hot water .

Air

Air is use for verius purpose in chemical industry. Air is use to transfer the liquid , it also use for instrumentation. Air compressor is use to produce air .

Nitrogen

Nitrogen is use for blanketing the process. There are some process which are air sensitive so we need to use nitrogen . This is one of the main Utility used in the chemical industry.

To produce nitrogen we need nitrogen plant. Utility used in the chemical industry.

The main application of nitrogen is providing blanketing to process .

Vacuum

Vacuum is nothing but negative pressure which use in distillation to distilled out the Chemical .

Vacuum can produce from steam ejector , vacuum pumps , water ejector. Utility used in the chemical industry.

The main application of vacuum is to distilled out the material under reduced temperature .

DM water

This is water which is use in chemical industry in some special application like in steam boiler to generate steam. To produce DM water we need a DM plant which consists of cationic bed and anionic bed .

DM water is use in process for washing as a utility or water as solvent . DM water is not only utility it is use as solvent also.
