2.2 Vacuum Tray Dryer | Working principal of VTD

Vacuum Tray Dryer

Vacuum Tray Dryer is widely used dryer in pharmaceutical industry and chemical industry. This is on of the simplest dryer out of different types of dryers . Working principle of VTD is also very simple.

what is vacuum tray dryer ?

Vacuum tray dryers is nothing but dryers which use to dry the material (solid or powder ) , under the vacuum.

Working principle of vacuum tray dryer

Vacuum tray dryer is on of the dryer out of different types of dryers used in chemical industry as well as pharmaceutical industry. In this type of dryers we spread the material on the tray . One VTD contains number of trays as per her capacity. We can order the VTD as per our required capacity. In VTD vacuum and heating system plays the main role in drying process.

We spread the material on tray of VTD. We can spread only 20 % to 30 % material of total tray capacity. One by one we have to spread the material on every tray of Vacuum tray dryer.

Then we need to place this tray in to the dryer . After tray placement , we need close the door . Then we start the vacuum . After vacuum start we can start the heating. In this way can do the drying . After getting our desired moisture we can unload the material from each tray .

In this type of dryers conduction as well as radiation type heat transfer take place to accomplish the drying.

Components of Vacuum tray dryer

The main components of VTD are as follows ,

  1. Trays
  2. Chamber
  3. Heat exchanger
  4. Condenser
  5. Condensate Receiver .
  6. Vacuum pump
  7. heating system

Trays

We can spread the material on tray. So tray is very important and main part of this dryer .

Heat exchanger

Role of Heat exchanger is exchange the heat between the wet material and heating liquid. Heating liquid may be steam , hot water or oil depending on requirement.

Condenser

Condenser condense the vapour which are coming from chamber of dryer . Condenser use chilling or cooling water to condense the vapour.

Condensate Receiver

In condensate receiver we can collect the condensed vapour.

Advantage and disadvantage of vacuum tray dryer

The main advantage of using VTD are as follows ,

  • It is very good for heat sensitive material
  • We can dry the material at low temperature due to use of Vacuum
  • we can dry the material faster due to more surface area available
  • We can use it for hygroscopic material

what are the disadvantages of VTD ?

There is nothing special disadvantages of VTD . The main disadvantage is it’s charging operation. We need to charge manually in to each tray is quite slow .Also safety point of view loading and unloading is not good.
