An Overview on membrane filtration
n this article I would like to share an interesting application of membrane filtration .So it is
most important for us and our daily life. Before discuss the membrane filtration I would like to
tell some important application of membrane filtration – it is use in ultra-filtration filtration and
nano-filtration reverse osmosis process .in the ultra-filtration the membrane made up by poly
ethylene tertheptle which is the type of polymer. Many applications are there in daily life of
membrane.why it is so important I would give a brief explanation of membrane filtration .
What is membrane filtration process ?
It is the process we separate the unwanted material or salt contaminate bacteria or impurity by using a filter ( membrane) which is very thick do not allow to pass large particle through it. in membrane process we can remove impurity from the waste water it is unit operation there is no chemical change only physical change occurs. The skate contaminate goes from higher concentrations regions to lower concentrations regions but the membrane allow only water molecules to pass through it.
The main membrane type filtration used in industries are ,
- Nano Filtration
- Ultra Filtration
- Micro Filtration
- Reverse Osmosis

so wide.
Advantage of membrane filtration
- It is used for ultra-filtration which gives a high purity products.
- Cost of the membrane is considerable .
- It can be easily available anywhere . Design of the membrane is so easy .
- handing is so easy
- Cleaning of the membrane is not a difficult task.
- Cheapest a compare to distillation.
Applications of membrane
There are so many applications of membrane separation.
1 In the formation of cu Zn cell there is one and one cathode which separates by a
membrane.
- The application of membrane is widely used in chlor alkali industries for the caustic soda
manufactured by the membrane separation process.
In the caustic soda there is two terminals one is negative which is known as anode and other
one is positive terminal which is known as cathode.anode side we feed brine + water and the
cathode side caustic soda which 31%concentrated on volume bases. So between the two
terminal we insert a membrane which allow the pass only Na+ ion .Na+ ion pas throw the the
membrane from anode side to cathode side and concentrations of the caustic increase
(32%) .so the membrane play very important role in the chloro alkali industries . - it is also used in the ultra filtration process .in the filtration process we can filter impurity by
using a thin membrane.in the ultra-filtration multiple membrane used in the series membrane One end of ultra-filtration unit we feed the waste water and other end we can achieved approx 90% pure - it is used in reverse osmosis process to filter the pure water which is in domestic purposes well as commercial.it is similar as ultra-filtration .in the reverse osmosis process we separate the carbonate and bicarbonate of the calcium and magnesium by using the thin membrane and we get the ion less water which pure RO is the main application of the membrane filtration process.
- membrane filtration process is used in the nano-filtration process which is similar to the reverse osmosis process and ultra-filtration process . In the nano-filtration process a very thick membrane is used . By using the membrane we can remove pesticide colour from wastewater. It is another good application of membrane filtration which is widely used in chemical as well as mechanical industries.
- in our body so many membranes in our body .if we give the example of our body some time we work hard and sweat comes out from our body so it is another example of the membrane filtration process. In the last of pera I would like to conclude that the membrane filtration process is very important and widely application.
