Welcome back friends, steam boilers are commonly used in all types of industry to produce steam. Mostly steam generators (boilers) are used in the chemical industry to produce the steam. A steam boiler will produce high pressure as we know pressure steam. There are a lot of manufacturers available in the market which manufacture the steam types of boilers. Some manufacturers are Thermax boilers and Ross boilers. Thermax boilers are largely used boilers in India.
In today’s article we study about the different types of boilers used in the chemical industry. What are the main types, how boilers work as well as we discuss some applications of boilers.
Steam boiler
A steam boiler is a heat exchanger or a heat equipment which is used to generate steam using water. Steam is nothing but the vapor or gas stage of water. The steam type of boiler is largely used to generate the steam , steam of high pressure or steam of low pressure. Generally a typical boiler generates the high pressure steam (steam of 10 bar ) only , if we need low pressure steam then we need to use PRV (pressure reducing valve).

Boilers are classified on the different parameters like IBR, mounting, firing. We learn every type of classification in this article. IBR Boilers
IBR boilers need an IBR license to operate or to install. There are some guidelines in IBR which we need to follow in such a boiler. We need to follow the IBR act 1950.In IBR types of boiler we need all Piping, valve and all fitting as IBR grade or IBR certified.
For boiler safety and human Indian boiler regulations acts contain some rules of guidelines we need to follow the instructions.

- We need to maintain IBR guidelines which is costly
- Cost vise it not good for low capacity boiler
Non IBR Boilers
As we study in previous types of boiler we need IBR certification or license to use that boiler. But in case of a non IBR boiler we don’t need to follow the IBR guidelines. A general boiler with low capacity comes under the non IBR boiler type. If we need a high capacity boiler like 10 Ton or 5 ton we need to go with an IBR boiler.
We can use a non IBR boiler if our requirement is below 1 ton. For non IBR Boilers we don’t need to use IBR fitting we can use normal fitting and Piping as per our boiler pressure.
Advantages of non IBR Boilers
- It does not required IBR certification
- We don’t need to purchase the IBR fitting which is costly.
- We can save the cost
Dis-Advantages of non IBR Boilers
- Safety is not good as like IBR boiler
- Not available if our requirement is above the 1 TPH (1 ton per hour)

In this type of boiler use hot gases or burning gases in the tube side of the boiler. Fire in the tube side generates the steam by conduction mechanism of heat transfer.
The type of fire tube boiler are,

In this type of boiler water is in the tube and fire is outside of the tube. So fire 🔥 heats the water inside the tube and generates steam.
