purification methods

Purification methods for organic compounds is a very big chapter and it is very important for chemical engineers and bachelor of science students. In this article we cover what are the different Purification methods in organic chemistry with details. We need to separate the components from mixture so have to use different types methods for separation. There are lot of purification methods available for purification of organic compounds.

Importance of Purification methods

Some main and key importance of Purification methods are as follows ,

  • To get desired purity of required material
  • We can separate the components from a mixture

Purification methods for organic compounds

Purification methods for organic compounds very important for all chemist and engineers. We can do purification of organic compounds by method of distillation , extraction and much more. In this article we will study each method in details. Actually not details but we can do study up to basic level . I will come with each article on purification methods in some few days . Today we will cover introduction of main purification methods.

Some main purification methods are as below ,

  • Liquid liquid extraction
  • Fractional distillation
  • Azeotropic distillation
  • Simple distillation
  • Vacuum distillation
  • Crystallization
  • Column chromatography

Liquid liquid Extraction

Liquid liquid extraction is widely used method for purification of organic compounds in chemistry or in Chemical Industries. This method is works on the principal of difference in solubility in different solvent . If we need to separate a mixture of two components , one Component is solute and another is solvent. We can add a third solvent in that mixture , so all of solute will come in that third solvent and we can separate the solution by layer separation or by distillation. We need choose a third solvent in which solute is more soluble than first solvent. In short it must to ,solubility of solute is more in third solvent as compared to first solvent.(Purification methods for organic compounds)

What is solvent extraction method ? Explain the process of solvent extraction ?

In solvent extraction method solute transfer from one solvent to another solvent and we will get purity of first solvent as well as solute .

How to select a suitable solvent for purification ?

Selection of solvent in liquid liquid extraction is depends upon some following points.

  1. Costing :- we always try to use a cheapest solvent as possible.
  2. Safety :- Solvent should be safe to handle.
  3. Re Using capability :- Select a solvent which can reuse for Process
  4. Reactive :- solvent should not react with any of components which is present in mixture .
  5. Heat of vaporization :- this is necessary to do distillation of solvent
  6. Solubility :- try to use a solvent which is not soluble in first solvent
  7. Selectivity (see Fractional Distillation )
  8. Toxicity

Widely used solvent for liquid liquid extraction or solvent extraction are , water , methanol , toluene , xylene etc.

Simple distillation

Simple distillation is one of the simple method for purification of organic compounds in chemistry or in chemical another method is nothing but fractional distillation. In simple distillation we can separate or do purification using difference in the boiling point of components which we want to separate. If boiling point difference is high or more than 20 degree we can use simple distillation method.

Fractional distillation

Fractional distillation is one of the main method which is used in chemical industry for purification of organic compounds. In this method we use fractional distillation column with tray or packing to get better mass transfer or to get a desired purity of required material (Purification methods of organic compounds).

Fractional distillation process

In short fractional distillation process is , we heat the material using re-boiler then vapor go to the column and in column rectification and striping happen. After then vapor go to the condenser and condenser condense the vapour in to liquid the liquid go to the reflux drum in which we can manage the reflux to get purity.(Purification methods for organic compounds)

Column chromatography

Column chromatography method is quite costly method due to use of large amount solvent . In this method we mix the mixture of components and solvent and pass it in column containing a resin bed . This method is very slow , we can use this method if cost of product is high.

Crystallization

Crystallization is also most likely Industrial method for separation of organic compounds. In short crystallization is nothing but formation of crystal by heating or cooling. In normal Industrial practice for crystallization they use cooling or chilling as a utility to chill the mixture(Purification methods of organic compounds).

Filtration

There lot of types of filtration avalable for purification orgonic compounds . Like RO , UF ,NF ,MF ,CF , Nutche filtration .

Crystallization process

In crystallization we add the material in a crystallizer and cool it using cooling or chilling then at a certain temperature solute will get out by forming crystals . Then this slurry we can sent to filtration system like centrifuge or nutche filter to separate the solid and liquid(Purification methods for organic compounds) . #simple distillation.
